Although situated on a lovely lot with an ample garden, the original layout of this Federal home was disconnected from the landscape. We relocated the kitchen from a north-facing back corner to an east-facing central space off the dining room surrounded by the garden. With the kitchen now at the home’s core, we added a tiered exterior patio to connect the first-floor public spaces with each other and the outdoors. By taking advantage of excess space in the existing bedrooms, we added two spacious full bathrooms on the second floor.
