Connected to the historic United Theatre in the heart of downtown Westerly, The Café is both an independent restaurant and a support space for the theater’s many events. The original vast space was dominated by a long bar, which we took as an existing condition when developing a floor plan for the new restaurant. Counterpoint to the existing bar, we inserted a banquette between two columns and a wall of built-in seating on the far wall with a fireplace at its center. These elements afforded a more balanced floor plan and transformed The Café’s vast, open dining space into a series of welcoming rooms and intimate nooks for dining, drinking, reading, and working.
